Hammamet is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Tunisia.
The Medina was built around the XVI century. The Kasbah, situated just in front of the beach,
was built in the XII century.

"Carthago delenda est". The Romans have definitely done
a "good job" when they destroyed Carthage back in 146 BC.
The site is not very vast and only a few ruins remain today. |

| Roman thermal baths of Antonino |

The thermal baths of Antonino, in Carthage, were built between 146 and 162 AD.
These thermal baths were the greatest in North Africa and are the demonstration of the
prosperity reached by Karthago during the Romans rule.
Today what still stands are just the ruins of the plinth of the structure where the
warehouse, the servant’s rooms and the ovens to heat the water were situated.
The thermal rooms were located on the upper floor sustained by monolithic columns
that it has been calculated weighed 70 tons each and they had a diameter of almost two meters.

The Cathedral on Byrsa Hill |

This is the place where the Acropolis of Cartage was located.
The Cathedral of St. Louis was built by the French in 1890 as this was the place were the French
King Louis IX died in 1270, during the siege of Tunis.
The National Museum, at the back of the Cathedral, has on display some interesting finds of the
ancient Carthage. |

Sidi Bou Said is a small town set on a cliff just north from Tunis.
Characteristic of Sidi Bou Said the narrow alleyways, the whitewashed walls, the blue doors and
windows with intricate metalworks.
The main road climbs up to a small square with some outdoor cafés which is the centre of
activity of the town. From here you can enjoy a nice view of the Gulf of Tunis and
the marina of Sidi Bou Said. |
