The Alfama district is the oldest and most characteristic district of Lisbon, as a matter of fact the Alfama it is the only
part of the city that survived the earthquake in 1755.
The streetcar n° 28 cross the whole Alfama district and it the best public transport to visit this part of the city.

The São Jorge Castle was built by the Visigoth in the V century, it was then conquered by the Moors
and finally by the Christians.
From the Miradouro de Santa Luzia the Castle can be reached in a few minutes walk going through narrow alleys
and small squares. From the Castle it is possible to enjoy a great view of the city.

Lisbon’s Cathedral (Sé) is located in the lower part of the Alfama district.
The church was built in Romanesque style but was modified various times during the centuries, particularly after earthquakes. |

Bullfight can be seen in Portugal as well (tourada) but unlike Spanish bullfights here the bull has the
horns sheathed in the leather to protect the bullfighter and at the end of the tourada it is not killed.

The Monastery of Jerónimos, in Belém, it is a splendid masterpiece in Manueline style. It was built by King
Manuel I to celebrate the return of the Portuguese navigator Vasco de Gama, after having discovered the route to India.
The construction began in 1502 and it was finished about a hundred years later.
The monument has been declared world patrimony of the humanity by the UNESCO. |

Bélem Tower lies on the shore of the Tagus River in Bélem.
The Tower, in Manueline style, was built by King Manuel I (from which takes the name the style).
The Tower is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. |

The Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) is in Bélem on the shore of the river Tagus, not too
far away from Belem Tower.
The monument was built in 1960, to commemorate the 500 year anniversary of the death of the Infant D. Henrique (Henry the Navigator). |

The first impression getting to the Pena National Palace is to be in a fairy tales castle!
The Pena National Palace it is a heterogeneous architectural complex built around 1850 for Ferdinando
Coburg-Gotha who married Mary II Queen of Portugal from 1826 to 1828. The building has been built mixing
different architectural styles: Arab, Gothic, manuelino, Renaissance, Baroque.
The Pena National Palace is surrounded by a magnificent and huge park. |
