Kuthodaw Temple

Kuthodaw Paya contains what can be defined the world’s largest book.
It consists of a great complex situated at the base of the Southeast stairway that climbs on Mandalay Hill.
This temple has been build by King Mindon in the same period of the construction of the Royal Palace.

The central stupa, connected to the outside through a long passageway, is located in the centre of an area of 13 acres where 729 shrines have been built. Every shrine contains a marble stele with inscriptions of the Tipitaka on both sides.

The inscription jobs commenced in October 1860 and were completed in May 1869.
Every stele measures 150 x 100 cms (59” x 39,3”).

Originally the incisions had been gold coated.
