The Carnival
The carnival in Venice is an old tradition with its origins back in the XIII century.
In the past the Venetian Carnival lasted several months and numerous laws and decrees had been
enforced to limit its excesses. The Carnival tradition lasted until the fall of the Republic
when Napoleon surrended it to Austria with the Treaty of Campoformio in 1797. The Carnival
will revive then in the 80’s with a different theme every year.
