Gorizia lies at the confluence of the two natural communication paths between East and West, the
Valleys of the Isonzo and the Vipacco (Vipava).
The name of Gorizia appears for the first time in the year 1001, in a document signed by emperor
Ottone III with which he gave half of the village of Goriza to the patriarch of Aquileia Giovanni II
and the Eppensteins, Earls of the Friuli.
Gorizia was reunified to Italy in 1918, during World War II, for a brief period (1943-1945), was
set under the German military administration. At after a brief period under Anglo-American control
was handed back to Italy in 1947. Gorizia had to hand over to Yugoslavia a part of his territory.
