Prague lies on the shores of the Vltava River.Founded at the
end of the IX century, the four independent cities that previously formed
Prague, merged in a single city in 1784. The four cities are Hradcany (the
Castle, to the west of the Vltava), Malá Strana (the lower district to
the south of the Castle), Staré Mesto (the Old City, on the Eastern shore
opposite to the Castle) and Nové Mesto (the New City to the southeast). The
Jewish district Josefov and the Vyšehrads district were annexed in the
second half of the XIX century.
Since 1992, the historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO
list of World Heritage Sites.
