Formentera is the smallest island of the Baleares archipelago (from West to East there
are approximately 20 Kilometres). The island can be easily visited by car, motorbike or pushbike.
Formentera is a very pleasant island both for its harsh nature and for the sea. The island
sports some beautiful white sandy beaches. The shallow waters close to the shore are ideal
for children. The low and degrading waters facilitate the ocean heating that even in June is
pleasantly warm.
Despite the tourist exploitation Formentera still remains a very liveable island, in any case
we have been travelling in the Island in June, when the tourist seasons is still at its
low ebb. |
Es Pujols is the "nightlife centre" of the island, despite this
the beach and the town are rather quit and never too crowded, at least in June.
On the waterfront there are nice shops and restaurants and in the evening there is a vivacious
market where products of local craftsmanship can be purchased. |

 |
The beach of Cala Saona is very small (around 200 mt)
and unfortunately this makes it very crowded, nevertheless the natural context is wonderful.
Particularly interesting the sight of the cove from above the ledges that form the boundaries
on the sides. |
| The beach of Migjorn is one of the longest of the
island and this is probably the reason why it is never too crowded. |
 |
Es Calò is just a tiny fishermen settlement with a small natural arbour, very suggestive
and picturesque.
Around Es Calò you can find pleasant inlets of rock but no sandy beaches.
Because of the small dimensions of the village and the scarce hotel receptiveness, this place
should be rather quite even in full tourist season. |
| The Lighthouse de Barbaria is located in the southernmost part of the island. The name
probably comes from the fact that this is the part of the island which is closest to the
African coasts that in the past was called Barberia. |
| The white sandy beaches of ses llleteses are very beautiful but unfortunately
also rather crowded, in any case it is always possible to find "a place in the sun" considering
they are spreaded over a rather large extension. |
The lighthouse de la Mola is located in the easternmost and highest part of the island.
In the area there are different walking paths:
Sa Talaiassa brings you to the highest point of the island.
Camí Romà (Roman route) starts at Es Calò and goes up to Es Mirador, from where
the view of the whole island can be seen. |
The north part of the island narrows to the point it forms a narrow
stretch of land with the beaches of ses Illetas to the left and the beaches of Llevante to
the right just a few dozen meters from each other.
The small island of Espalmador (only 3 Kms²) lies in front of the tip of this stretch of
land and is separated from the Island of Formentera by a narrow stretch of sea of just 150 mt. |
 |
The salt pans are found in the north part of the Island and today are
almost inactive.
These salt pans are the natural habitat for various spices of waterfowl and they are
partly natural reserve.
Morning and sunset are the best times of the day to visit the salt pans and with a bit
of luck you can shoot some interesting pictures thanks to the skimming light. |
